Title: Sentience (1/?)
Pairings: Nicholas Rush/Everett Young eventually
Rating: PG-13
Warnings: Character death
Spoilers: Up until Earth and possibly including Human
Summary: An experiment goes very, very wrong.

It was Eli that found him, immediately panicking and calling for TJ and Young over the radio. Young got there first, stopping when he saw Eli kneeling next to Rush's prone form. He was on the ground, eyes closed and looked as if he was sleeping, except for the fact that he wasn't breathing and wires were haphazardly inserted into his head, the back of his neck. Eli was holding one of Rush's hands, hoping for him to wake up and yell at them all for interrupting him.

But it never happened.

After TJ arrived, it didn't take her long to declare him dead and Young pull Eli away from the body. Young himself felt nothing about it, emotions numb as he pulled on the mask of the leader and took control of the situation. Everything else, like emotions, could be dealt with later.

Breaking the news to the crew wasn't difficult. Young called everybody into the mess hall (it was crowded, with most people standing against the wall as Young sat on the table that was his podium) and flat out told them. Rush was dead and they were stuck dealing with the workload the scientist was left behind. Eli was quiet, fumbling with the kino remote while Scott and Chloe sat next to him in an attempt to comfort him. Drs. Volker and Brody had conflicting emotions on their face while it was quite obvious what Franklin thought of Rush being dead.

Young couldn't take it.

He left, leaving TJ and Scott to take over the meeting and go to the infirmary, where Rush was lying in a bed, covered by a blanket. The last time Young had seen him this still was when he had collapsed in the gateroom, suffering from two withdrawals and lack of sleep. Even then, he had still moved and Young was glad that TJ had covered him up.

"Damn it, Rush. You had to do something like this, didn't you?"

He was angry, angry that he hadn't been there to stop it. Angry that he didn't realize he had something like this planned. For a second, the lights in the infirmary dimmed and Young looked up. It almost seemed as a response to what he had to say, but he knew that wasn't possible. They went back to normal and didn't change for the rest of the time he was in the infirmary, even when he took the broken pair of glasses from Rush's pocket.

Later, he used the communication stones, switching with Telford, it looked like. It didn't matter to him, he just wanted to report the incident. There wasn't much the general could do in his position, except to put some scientists on stone watch for the near future. Young didn't like the idea of other scientists coming in and trying to mess with the Destiny, but he didn't protest, just nodding and agreeing with him. He didn't go back as soon as the meeting was over, instead pulling Rush's file up and going through it. There was nobody to tell as the rest of his family was dead. No wonder Rush wanted to get to Destiny so badly. There was nothing left on Earth for him. The thought made him put back the file and go back.

The power was off as he lurched back into his body, the dizzy feeling each time he switched was something he could never get used to. He was standing in front of Scott and Eli, both of them looking angry.

"What the hell is going on?"

They both looked at him before Scott hesitantly said, "Colonel?" Telford had done something again, Young guessed, if their expressions are any hint.

"Yeah, I'm back."

Just as those words left his mouth, the ship powered itself back up, lights and controls turning back on before the familiar jerk of going into FTL. Eli stepped away from the control panel he was in at, holding his hands up.

"I didn't do that."

According to Scott and Eli, the ship came out of FTL and immediately shut down when Telford switched with him. No matter what anybody did, it wouldn't turn on and it wasn't heading towards a star, drifting in between solar systems. It was almost like Destiny knew it was Telford in his body and reacted accordingly. Not that anybody could blame the ship after what Telford had tried last time he was on board. Telford first hunted down Rush, but once he found out about his death, he went looking for Eli, yelling at him to fix the ship. That was around the time Young had returned. If everybody wasn't glad to have Young instead of Telford before, they were now.

Darkness. Light. Numbers. Zeroes and ones, repeating themselves over and over until he felt sick. But he couldn't get sick. Not now, not ever. Things have changed. He was different, more infinite. He see the entirety of the ship, the eighty or so reluctant crewmembers. His crew. It was almost as if he had been blind and deaf for his entire life and all of the sudden, he could see and hear. It was more than any one person could handle.

It was a good thing Nicholas Rush was no longer a person, now wasn't it?
